The Direct Marketing sector regards the telephone as one of its most successful tools. Consumers experience telemarketing from a completely different point of view: more than 92% perceive commercial telephone calls as a violation of privacy.

Telemarketers make use of a telescript – a guideline for a telephone conversation. This script creates an imbalance in the conversation between the marketer and the consumer. It is this imbalance, most of all, that makes telemarketing successful. The EGBG Counterscript attempts to redress that balance.

Dear isadub,

In the UK we often take the right to blog for granted. But what if a post on isadub landed you in prison?

In China, internet sites are blocked, chat rooms are monitored and journalists and bloggers are arrested.

Amnesty International is deeply worried about the restriction of the right to freedom of expression in China. Right now we’re appealing for the release of Shi Tao, a journalist arrested in 2004 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for sending an email to a pro-democracy website in the US about press restrictions around the anniversary of the crackdown on peaceful protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

You can do something now to help:

You can do something now to help. We are asking for you and your readers to write to the Chinese authorities demanding the release of Shi Tao, as part of our irrepressible.info campaign against internet repression. See here for more details.

To show your support for freedom of expression on the internet add this link (advertisement) to your blog and help Amnesty International find more people to stand up for human rights.

Thank you for your help,

Drew Davies
(Amnesty International)

Felicity Lowde was the very first person to post a comment here on isadub. I’ve always enjoyed reading her regular blog, which is a charming (in the best sense of the word) blend of art, poetry, history and personal stories. In many ways, I’d like to emulate what she has achieved in her blog. In addition, we’ve swopped a few comments to each other across the interweb.

Her blog is relevant to Ireland because she is an historian who has official access to ‘secret’ historical British documents. I think she calls it ‘secret history’. Naturally, many of these relate to Irish historical events.

I’m mindful of the lawyers so…she has made references in the past to alleged internet harassment by other named people on her regular blog. She has now taken it further by (a) writing about it on her new ancillary blog and (b) engaging lawyers for possible legal action about her alleged cyberbullying.

I would encourage you to visit both sites and make your own mind up. The second blog, http://felicity-lowde-cyberbully-victim.blogspot.com/, also has links to cyberbullying and ‘malicious communications’ that others may find useful. It only refers to UK law, though.

The strapline on her second blog reads:

This blog responds to a series of extremely abusive cyberbullying from: [6 named individuals], and others. This notice will detail in full the way in which I’ve been harassed, stalked, bullied, harangued, libelled and and blackmailed over the past two years, with examples and evidence.

fjl – I reserve the right to edit your posts if you name those individuals here. Right now, they are legally unproven accusations.
