The LE Ciara (P42) docked in Dublin on Thursday and I caught a few photos.

The ship prefix LÉ stands for Long Éireannach, or “Irish ship” as Gaeilge. (source: wiki).

Naval service vessels are all named with traditional Irish female names, taken from history and Celtic mythology.

LE Ciara is the fastest ship (of eight) in the Irish Naval Service.

Ciara was the daughter of a wealthy Christian family who settled near Nenagh, Co Tipperary in the 7th century. Ciara was a devout Christian and aged 20, she established a convent near her home which became famous and grew rapidly. It grew to such an extent that Ciara established another convent near Durrow, Co Laois where she spent many years, though she returned to her home before her death in 685.

Artist Kate Byrne will conduct an overview of contemporary photography. This lecture will explore the idea of empty interiors and social spaces that capture the ‘psychology of architecture’.

And, yes, the photo below is probably inappropriate but, hey, that’s why I’m going to the lecture!

So I bought a newspaper and looked for somewhere to sit and read it for awhile. There are few or no seats in Smithfield square. What was the idea behind blocking off a huge square to traffic and putting nothing in it. And people are surprised when the place is dead at night? Surely the empty space is not reserved for the once-yearly ice rink?

I knew I shouldn’t have but I sat on a wall near the Children’s Court. After a few minutes, a Dublin man approached me and asked if I spoke English.

He didn’t look too bad but I’ve lived in Dublin long enough to know what was coming next, so I said, ‘Yeah, but I don’t have any money‘. He nodded ok and wandered off to ask other people for money. Weird.

The name of John Roberts is synonomous with Georgian architecture in Waterford city and is also important further afield in Ireland.

RIAI‘s 3rd annual ‘Simon Open door’ Fundraising Initiative.

Participating RIAI architects throughout Ireland will open their offices on Saturday, 28 April and give members of the public an hour’s consultation with an architect in return for a donation to Simon of €60. Some Waterford RIAI Members will host a stand at the RIAI Irish Architecture Awards Exhibition in the Waterford Institute of Technology from 9am – 1pm on Saturday 28th as part of this year’s John Roberts Festival.

There will also be some Waterford county architects holding consultation in their own offices. Therefore if you need a consultation with an architect that’s where to find them!

It’s an opportunity for you to support the Simon Community and also have a nice day out as well. Have a look at the festival’s programme and I reckon you’ll find something interesting to do.

It’s a statue outside Maritime House and I never took the time to read the inscription because I had the attitude of ‘it’ll always be there and I’ll read it the next time‘.

Well, I was down there this week and it’s gone! Maritime House is still there (could be gone by now?) but the statue’s gone. I hope they’re keeping it somewhere safe and it’ll make a reappearance on the quay in the near future… How sad.

Ironically, I’ve some friends going to see Mamma Mia in the Point tonight. Must ask them tomorrow if they noticed?

And, co-incidence indeed, I’m listening to The Waterboys right now and they’re playing in the Point on March 18. Spooky!

And the Waterboy’s song is The whole of the moon. And we’ve just had a lunar eclipse a few days ago.

Oh deary me, I really should go and lie down in a dark room for a little while.
