Smithfield reflections Nov 2006 I was down in Smithfield today with 30 minutes to kill. So I bought a newspaper and looked for somewhere to sit and read it for awhile. There are few or no seats in Smithfield square. What was the idea behind blocking off a huge square to traffic and putting nothing in it. And people are surprised when the place is dead at night? Surely the empty space is not reserved for the once-yearly ice rink?
.

I knew I shouldn’t have but I sat on a wall near the Children’s Court. After a few minutes, a Dublin man approached me and asked if I spoke English.

He didn’t look too bad but I’ve lived in Dublin long enough to know what was coming next, so I said, ‘Yeah, but I don’t have any money‘. He nodded ok and wandered off to ask other people for money. Weird.
