Phoenix Park Stag Deer Photos

I took these photos yesterday with my new Nikon D50 – sorry but I can’t help saying that! The weather wasn’t great and it was pretty gloomy for most of the day. It rained intermittenly as well through the day and I was afraid of getting water on the lenses.
A quick spin up to the Phoenix Park seemed to the ideal location for my first attempt with the new camera. It would give me various options ranging from long-distance shots of the playing fields, close-in shots around the zoo, landscape shots with the papal cross and, of course, the Park’s most famous residents, the wild, free ranging deer. Sorry Madam President!
Of course, being a bank holiday weekend, they’ll all gone for a long weekend to somewhere sunny. The only deer I could find were these rag-tag group of stags. They obviously had no intention of moving and had hidden themselves away in the deer-equivalent of the garden shed. For the first few shots, I wasn’t sure if they were deer or just funny looking logs! They did grace me with a few moves of their head.
The last photo is of an old tree that I’ve always admired. It’s near the magazine fort, on one of the many hairpin bends in that section of the park. It’s obviously old and gnarled but it has a certain charm, even when compared to the other more glamourous trees in the park.
