Personally, I’ve always had the impression that The Sindo was written by no more than three people. Now I think I can see where I may have got that impression. The Phoenix magazine has an interesting article this week about The Sunday Independent. The headline is Sindo’s family tree grows even bigger and it goes into great detail about how the by-line has become more important than the story.
A recent Sindo had the photo of Cara O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan has achieved many things in life, not least of which is being the sister of the deputy editor, Anne Harris. Another story by Brendan O’Connor focussed on the funeral of Harris’s mother, who was not a public figure. The newspaper story also detailed the attendance the Sindo’s editor, Aengus Fanning (a.k.a. Harris’ fiancee), and her ex-husband, Eoghan, who co-incidently writes a weekly column for The Sindo.
Other contributors to the newspaper include:
Constance Harris – daughter of Anne and Eoghan Harris.
Dion Fanning – son of the editor, Aengus Fanning.
Sarah Caden – wife of Brendan O’Connor.
Mary O’Sullivan – sister of Anne Harris.
Other occasional contributors include:
Evan Fanning – another son of the editor.
Prof Conal Fanning – brother of the editor.
Nancy Harris – another daughter of Anne and Eoghan Harris.
I’m sure the owner, Tony O’Reilly Sir Anthony O’Reilly KBE, would be shocked to learn of such ‘in-breeding’ at one of the Republic’s leading newspapers and finest companies. Hah!
I’m interviewing next week and I have to document the majority of my questions in advance. I have to score all candidates fairly and evenly. After the interviews, any candidate can apply using the Data Protection Act to see their score, and the score of the winner. Plus any loose notes I took during the interviews. I would love to have been a fly-on-the-wall at some of the interviews of the people listed above. I think it would have been a great learning experience for me.

Anne Harris has used her right of reply and written a letter to today’s The Phoenix magazine.
Cara O’Sullivan
It doesn’t surprise me at all that THe Phoenix chose the occasion of my mother’s funeral to mount yet another obsessive and malicious attack on me and others who work for the Sunday Independent.
But what does surprise me is the attribution of extraordinary fecundity to my mother, Nance O’Sullivan, who did her bit for the O’Sullivans by bearing six sons and two daughters but who can claim no credit at all for the renowned Cork soprano Cara O’Sullivan. I’m sure she would feel honoured if she could but it’s just not true.
The Phoenix says (Sept 22, 2006): ‘Cara is a sister of Sindo Deputy Editor Anne Harris, although the journalist, with typical modesty, forebore to mention this relationship‘.
Since I didn’t write the caption under Cara’s picture, and since Cara O’Sullivan is no relation of mine anyway, I am astonished that even the The Phoenix, on the basis of a complete falsehood should publish this latest smear on me and others in the Sunday Independent.
Yours sincerely,
Anne Harris,
Deputy Editor
Sunday Independent
The Phoenix admitted it erred and apologised to Cara O’Sullivan!
I am looking of the e-mail address for the journalist Mary O’Sullivan.
Many thanks in advance.
Tony
