From today’s The Irish Times…
Madonna defies Russian Christians
Eh? What? Is it the Second Coming? Is the end of the world nigh? I guess it depends on your point of view. The (real) story continued:
Madonna sang suspended from a cross during her first Moscow concert yesterday, defying a plea from the Russian Orthodox Church to drop that part of her act because it was blasphemous…
It would have been really cool if, instead, the Church* had gotten a bit sniffy and criticised her as a charlatan because their Madonna wouldn’t have needed wires! Seriously, imagine if their spokesman had come out and said, ‘Why pay 100 roubles to see that tricked-up Madonna when you can see our Madonna for free every Sunday at a venue near you’. I’d like to see the musician’s PR team reply to that!!
* A 10-second scan of their site makes me want to come back. And I will because I’ve added it to my del.icio.us (shameless self-promotion!). The first thing I noticed was History (as seen from the West) and History (from their point of view).
From the letters page…
A speedy appointment
Madam, I see that, according to its recent advertisement, Bord na gCon* will require its new CEO to have a ‘significant track record’.
Yours etc,
Michael A. Carroll
* Bord na gCon is the Irish Greyhound Board.
From the opinion page…
Aer Lingus still has crisis of identity
– Why aren’t they wearing seatbelts?
– Looks like he’s reversing the aircraft into a tight space or maybe he’s looking at the side mirror and thinking ‘look at that crazy fecker with South Tipp plates rarin’ up the outside lane at 900 miles an hour’.
– She looks like she’s tuning into a music radio station.
– I can see where they put their sunglasses but where’s the cup holders for the coffee?
– Methinks they’re too attractive to be pilots. He, in particular, looks like a refugee from a Grecian 2000 shampoo advertisement.
There’s no copyright attached to the photo so I don’t know who owns it or if it is copyrighted. Without evidence to the contrary, I’m assuming it’s copyright-free. So don’t send me an invoice for the use of the image!!
It’s a good article by Emmet Oliver about the forthcoming Aer Lingus IPO. He says there is a lot of interest from retail investors. In the main, these investors hope to buy the shares and dump them shortly afterwards for a profit, a la the Eircon IPO. No, that’s not a typo – see posts passim. I’m not really interested in this IPO as I tend to take note of The Economist‘s caution that no airline has ever made a profit ever (if you add up all their historical profits and losses). I’m also conscious that the Government and, even worse, the Unions, will own a blocking stake in the airline, post-IPO.
On the plus side, Oliver writes that ‘those who remain shareholders for a year will qualify for bonus shares’. I think I might get the prospectus and calculate what the potential break-even price of the shares would be once one adds in the bonus shares.

I agree with the church as well as yourself on this occasion. Madonna has never been able to see the difference between stylish and creepy-cheap. It’s an insult- in both senses. The religious sense and the style sense that you describe.
You have to be Beaudelaire or Monty P to get away with that drama- and even then you can’t crush the simple objection there is on spiritual grounds. Jesus’ death is something you don’t seriously take the mickey out of unless you’re gormless.
Good dancer tho’.
I think Madonna is one of the most intelligent businesswomen around today. She’s a completely useless singer but she buys in the talent that makes her successful. Yeah, she is a good dancer.
