I made two people smile today

I made two people smile today and it made me happy.
I washed my clothes yesterday and noticed my recently worn shirts were all bright, sunny colours and it made me happy.
I see the bees, recently released from their dungeon hive, drinking all the nectar they can, wild with the wonder of what, to them, is a brand new world and it makes me happy.
I see all the birds darting around, chirping at the top of their little lungs, ducking and diving in wild, crazy paper-airplane manoeuvres and it makes me happy.
Scientists have studied birds and concluded that their lot is a grim business: 1,000 bugs a day for their young chicks and that’s before they get to feed themselves. But the birds don’t care about those scientific facts. Right now, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life (eh?, apologies to some band?). They’ve evolved to adapt to the fact that the early morning sun allows ‘the early bird to catch the worm’.
Maybe we humans need to evolve (or de-evolve?) a bit. Early Man, and some not-so-early, invented rituals and superstitions to try and control Nature; to bring it to bring under his control; to use and abuse it. Ritual, prayer and superstition have been imposed on us and we’ve lost some of that awe that our non-human animal brethren have retained.
I’m not talking about abandoning one’s job and disappearing into the woods to run around naked, hugging trees. In ten words or less, I’d suggest we take the time to ‘smell the roses’. Maybe it’s what scientists call ‘genetic determinism’. Right now, who knows, who cares?
Right now, I’m happy and I hope you are too! And in honour of this moment, I’d like to quote some of the lyrics from Deus by The Sugarcubes.
I thought I had seen everything,
He (God – ed) wasn’t white and fluffy,
He just had side burns,
He just had side burns,
And a quiff,
He said hi.
I said hi. I was still clean,
I was squeeky clean.
I was surprised.
Just as you would be.
